Ethnographic research (2018)

The graphic design of storefront signs in urban space is not just collection of colours, letters and shapes that help us to navigate ourselves trough the city. Graphic design and typography (alike all other visual disciplines) imbued with cultural and social connotations. Colours, shapes, letters and symbols together form visual languages that can be associate with specific ideas, communities and beliefs.


Visual Lexicon of Paris looks at the graphic design of over three thousand storefront signs in Paris. By coding and categorising their visual appearance, they will form a visual lexicon that reaches beyond their functional intent and reveals a visual order and the social and cultural demography of the city.
